Competition Brief:

To energize the dialogue of the future of the South Street Seaport district in the wake of the closing of the Fulton Fish Market, the Emerging New York Architects Committee (ENYA)of the AIA New York Chapter focused its third biennial international ideas competition in collaboration with the Seamen’s Church Institute. The South Street Seaport: Re-envisioning the Urban Edge publication presents full-color images of over 40 innovative and fascinating jury-selected entries, chosen from a highly international group of submissions. The publication features contextual essays by noted authors Michael Sorkin and Ann L. Buttenwieser in addition to jury comments. This book is of interest to students, planners, and anyone interested in the South Street Seaport area and the reinvention of historic areas in the wake of large-scale change.

Competition Brief:

At the site of James Renwick Jr.'s Smallpox Hospital on Roosevelt Island, this competition was inspired by the island's tradition of public gathering. A multi-use facility for both performing and visual arts, the program was designed with the entire Roosevelt Island community in mind -- tailored to fit an arts organization with community outreach programs for the Roosevelt Island Visual Arts Association and Coler-Goldwater Specialty Hospital.

Groen Hoek: East River Boathouse Competition

Competition Brief:

This ideas competition for a boathouse provided the East River Kayak Club and the East River Apprentice shop with direct access to the Bushwick Creek Inlet and the East River. Sited at the terminus of a 28-acre waterfront park, the program included a wood shop, a boat library, a cafe, and a boat launch.
